I am unable to either verify or repair permissions on my iMac G5 running OSX 10.5.8. The utilities dialog box says checking permissions data base this may take some time. The process never goes on beyond this message. The barber pole keeps running and no mater how long I wait, it never repairs permissions. I have had this same problem with this computer on OS 10.7 as well. I have tried this using Disk utilities as well as Cocktail. Neither works.

Boot from your installation/restore disk

permission repairs

You may not be allowing enough time for the database read. This can take up to 30 minutes or more before the permission repairs even start!

Permissions will not repair, even with disk.

I've had the same problem JK is having for about a year now.
I have a new macbook pro, 15 inch with 10.5.8. I had an older macbook pro that started having this same problem after I did an update for Tiger, never could repair after that. I had it down to the Genius bar several times and the they couldn't fix it either.
I've just learned to deal with, except for today, the last four entries in the repair list were as follows:

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Extensions/webdav_fs.kext/Contents/Resources/load_webdav" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/pppd" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/vpnd" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Now, I'm concerned. Does anyone know what this is?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks K

SUID permissions

Don't worry about SUID messages.

Permissions you can ignore on 10.5:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US

using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.

Permission SUID warnings...

Thank you Brit, that is definitely reassuring..

I was a PC, gone Mac, so getting used to the fact that my computer won't get infected with a lethal virus and then try to blow up the world, takes a bit of getting use to.

Thanks! That was the trouble. It took over one hour to both read the permissions data base and then repair the permissions. Your advice to give it lots of time, was right on!
