Not a lot of information here.
Is this the Compaq you are talking about or it is another computer?
Can the PC, whichever one, reach the internet while on the LAN?
What was the repair? Could the repair have changed any settings you may have made?
What settings must you change in order to get this to work? The ones that are wrong. With the supplied information, I cannot do any better than that.

They wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Vista

You will need to start from scratch in exactly the same way as you did it the first time.
Establish shares on the PC and an account on the Mac.
Go from there
