It is possible, but not recommended, to use a Windows formatted iPod on your Mac but it is not possible to use a Mac formatted iPod on your Windows machine.
Unless there is a fancy piece of software that will do it for you.

but won't the mac computer reformat the ipod back to mac when it is connected again.

the iPod will only be formatted if you tell iTunes to Restore it.
Remember that I said that the Mac can read both a Windows iPod and a Mac one?
