Mac OS X forum: Quicktime - No sound after update

Seems the QT Update changed the Mac's Audio MIDI Set up.

For those suffering from the same problem, here is a solution:

Open Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Set Up. Under the Audio Devices tab, make sure the Audio Output Format is 44100.0 2ch-16bit. This will solve the problem, however, I do not know if it is permanent; you may have to do this if the sound disappears.

I am having this issue, but when I go to the Audio MIDI Setup application, I don't have anything under Audio Output but for "Output is not Supported". Would you know what would cause this?

I have a Intel iMac. And, it was my mistake - the above answer did fix it, it just took me a few more minutes to activate the right box!

I read and did what was suggested for those who updated quicktime (Audio Output Format is 44100.0 2ch-16bit), but alas, I still have no sound on avi files that were shot with a Flip video cam. Any further suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, ballroomj

Thank you for referencing the article. I did see that a decoder is necessary and downloaded not only a decoder, but various plug-ins to enhance Quicktime, but up to now nothing has worked. When I downloaded the avi files from the Flip originally I had audio, then i updated Quicktime and no more audio. I know the clips have video because they play on another computer - a pc.

I recently had the "pleasure" of trying to find a way for the AVI's produced by the FLIP to be played using QuickTime.

Here is the method I used.

Download and install a copy of MPEG Streamclip. It is a free piece of software which will convert those AVI files into MPEG4, DV and a host of other file types that QT can play. This includes sound.
These files can be imported into iMovie HD or iMovie08

Mount the camera on the desktop and open it until you find the video. It's in a folder called 100VIDEO and, if I remember correctly, it is inside another folder.

If you have the CD that came with the FLIP, you will find a Mac installer on there. Run that and download the codec that it points to. The codec is for QT.
Once that codec is installed, there is no need to run the installer again.

You should at least see "built in speakers" as an audio out choice in the Sound Pane of System Preferences.

Do you have ANY sound at all from your Macboo???

I had the same problem, and got lucky in finding this mystical solution that someone posted on some other "MacHelp" site.

Believe me, it works...it resets the audio to the right frequency automatically

My situation might be a little different.

What I did was convert a video from my hard-disk camcorder's .mod video to Quicktime. What I used is Mpeg Streamclip, which is very fast and good. However, I got no sound on the resulting QT .mov files.

I diddled the prefs for EXPORTING the QT video: I changed "auto" for the audio sample rate to 44100Hz. That did it! The next exported QT .mov had great audio.

I also changed it to mono. I doubt this affected the problem, but it reduced file size for web posting.
