DVD software problem (PBG3, Firewire)

by jennywren1420 - 5/10/06 10:01 AM

Oh, help! For the first time, a few days ago, I tried playing a DVD on my PowerBook G3 (Firewire) laptop. A variety of things happened. First, the disc loaded but wouldn't play, and pressing Play froze the screen; the next time the controller appeared, said it was loading the disc but nothing happened. After that, when I tried loading a disc, I could hear the drive whirring, off and on, but nothing happened--the disc didn't even load.

I tried reinstalling just the software for DVD and CD functions from my old 9.0.4 install disk (I have gone from that to 9.1, to 9.2 since I got the computer), but it refused to cooperate and gave me an error message.

Then I did a clean reinstall of 9.0.4 and reinstalled all the subsequent versions up to 9.2.2--where I was when all this started. I also installed the DVD software update to version 2.4. Then I tried playing a disc (not the same one), and the same process happened over again.

I checked out all the info on "DVD" and found that I had different versions of the software in different places. I tried to straighten that out, but it didn't help.

My questions: Is there a way for me to uninstall and reinstall just the DVD software from the 9.0.4 install CD and then from the 9.1, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 OS update files I downloaded from the Web (all of which seemed to work fine--I just never tried playing a DVD before)? And how to do that? Is that what I should do? Keep your answers simple, please. I read everything I could get my hands on at Apple Support, in _Sad Macs, Bombs and Other Disasters_ and everywhere else I could think of. It just left me more at sea than before. In particular, the Apple site said to remove a whole lot of extensions without saying what to do after that.

Second: Did I make a mistake when I installed Apple DVD software version 2.4? I believe that 9.0.4 used 2.1 and 9.1 used 2.3, so I thought that 2.4 would be compatible with 9.2.

Last, to further confuse this addled brain, I saw a notice on one of the Apple Support documents that said, "Apple DVD Player is a software-only DVD player. It is not compatible with the DVD hardware in the Power Macintosh G3, PowerBook G3 [of which my laptop is one], and Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics) series computers. Elsewhere, I read that there is a distinction between G3 series PowerBooks and G3 PowerBooks. Mine is the Firewire PB, which seemed not to be a "PowerBook G3 series" type of laptop. I don't understand whether that notice is saying that I don't need DVD software, nor why the OS versions I reinstalled seem to have installed DVD software along with the rest.

I'm very sorry that this is so long and full of questions (though they are really just part of one question). I throw myself on your mercy, your honors, and hope that you can give me guidance.

Respectfully (and abjectly) yours,

Jenny
