Computer help forum: Content.IE5 - Can I delete this folder?

in IE: Tools>Internet Options>General (tab) and click Delete Files ... under Temporary Internet Files. It's safe to delete the offline content also. You can use the Settings button to limit the disk space used without any negative consequences to some 20 Mb (more if you download BIG files).

There are all kinds of utilities to be found to do this automatically at each startup, or every time you exit IE. That's (a little bit) good for your privacy, but not really needed.

You say you are using Windows 98.
Add the following line to Autoexec.bat.
Deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1\content.ie5 >nul
Every time you boot it will purge all those pesky files. Suggest you place it just above the Set Temp= variable line.
Also if you wish you can delete the temp file noted in the Set Temp variable as well as C:\windows\cookies using the same type of command.
The folders will automatically regenerate but your system will be cleaner.
There is one caveat though. You will lose any saved passwords that are stored and you will have to reenter them when you access that particular site.

I have an Adware programme in my temporary internet folder that I can't seem to remove called "Adware.CDT". I can't find it and Norton won't delete, neither will my Adware SE edition. Any ideas or tricks as to how you got rid of yours? Mind you, I am brand new to going into the registry to delete files, etc. So I need very detailed steps if you or anyone else can help. Thanks!

Sorry for the dely in response to your post of 03/12/04. I also am not a genius at computing !! I removed that by going into "tools" in internet explorer then into "internet options" where it then says (second down) in the middle "delete temporary internet files" do just that and that should do it . If that does not work then look for it in a search in temporary internet files .This is for windws xp

Don't delete the Content.IE5 folder, just everything that's inside it.

I find the easiest way to remove index.dat files is to use the free program ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ if told it will remove the index.dat files at next boot.

Am enclosing a tutorial for ccleaner, it's the best tutorial I've seen. http://www.timeatlas.com/tutorials/Ccleaner.htm I am using IE7 myself and it works OK deleting index.dat with ccleaner, but check with the tutorial about how to delete index.dat.

After stopping the Internet Explorer process, navigate to the Content.IE5 folder, right-click Content.IE5, then click "Rename", then enter "xyz", and OK. Then right-click xyz and click "Delete".
