Is my hard drive screwed? or is it just malware?

So here are all my computers symptoms:
1. Computer skips normal booting screens and jumps strait to the HP hand where system recovery and settings are accessible.
2. The computer will not respond to anything on this screen and freezes up IF the computer was recently turned off. (Basically I can get passed it at first if I let the computer sit for 10 mins)
3. When I do get passed the HP screen and log on to windows 7 desktop I cannot run a program with out the computer freezing up. This also happens with the system recovery program. It will run normally for a bit and then its almost like my computer over heats and the program stops working.
4. The error the computer thinks is happening is that there is no valid system partition in the system partition. I've looked into this and the problem that this causes does not seem to be mine.
I thought about doing a complete reset but when I try to back up the computer data I get a partition error again
I would REALLY appreciate if someone could tell me what I'd wrong or what I can try to do besides a complete reset. That's a last ditch effort.
