HP Pavillion dv-7 Laptop keeps shutting down on its own. ?

Hi All -
So..I've seen previous posts, and similar questions on other sites. Here's the rub - I'm almost certain it's a heating issue...but I went and bought a laptop fan te plugs in via USB cable. That's not helping, at all...especially if I run a large program like a PC game or something similar. Then I thought it might be speed or RAM space, or something like that...so I removed all programs that I didn't absolutely need, cleaned out registry error files, ran security checks, defrag'd, etc. Still...the issue. It will shut off and I have to wait 15-20 minutes to turn it back on...always with the "your computer didn't shut down properly" screen. Oy.
Here's the specs:
HP Pavillion dv7-1135 NR. Laptop.
AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-50 - 2GHz
Windows Vista - Service Pack 2 - 64bit OS
I bought I USB Cooler Fan:
Airflow = 28CFM
Speed = 1500rpm
Voltage = DC 5v
Power Consumption = .9 Watts
Rated Current = 180mA
Fan = 60x60x10mm
MTBF = 20k Hours
Honestly...if I hold my hand over the laptop fan...it doesn't really seem that strong. But, I was told at Best Buy that for anything less than some mega gaming PC, the fan would work fine.
So...is the fan just too wimpy? Or is there some other issue? I know Vista sucks...would it help, for instance, to install a different OS..like Windows 7, etc?
Is some heating or fan component within my laptop likely broken?
Let me know...all advice is sooooo welcome. : )
