Yesterday my processor fan starting running non stop after a couple weeks of it running fast occasionally. I took things apart to clean it to check if that was the problem. When I hooked everything back up and powered it on I got a beep code. It consisted of 2 second long beeps that just kept going until I disconnected power. I made sure everything was tight, reseated the RAM, tried again. The PC powered and booted no problem. I got a pop up telling me that my system had recovered from a serious system error. I ran a disc check, that was fine. Now after a few minutes of running the processor fan is right back to running constantly. When I try to shut down it acts like it's going to, I get the "Windows is now shutting down screen" and then it just stays there. I have to physically shut it down every time.

1. I'd dive in again but this time I would use the canned air to clean and replace the heat sink compound on CPU and if this is an older PC the GPU and BRIDGE CHIPS.
2. As to the shutdown, research how to run CHKDSK on the next boot up. I missed which OS so I can't offer a search for you.
3. It's proper for a CPU fan to run when the CPU is busy or under load. Some folk forget that.

I am still running XP. It is an older PC. I had someone tell me that my hard drive was probably about to crash. I also had a suggestion of the processor cooler. The PC has been running relatively slow since this happened. The processor fan has been running constantly since about 5 minutes after booting the system this morning. Yesterday it ran non stop for about 5 hours while I was running checks and backing things up.
That's code for a lot of things.

I've encountered folk that say the hard drive is about to crash but it's just code for a general failure or issue. I see XP's chkdsk is widely discussed so I'll stop about that and ask if you did the canned air and heat sink compound work?
Given the machine's age it's very likely that compound is dry, cracked and there is a lot of dirt in the heat sinks.

I have not tried that. I don't have any of either at this time, and no money to get any right now.

I was told to try a system restore to try to resolve the not shutting down issue as well

Let's hear if the problem is solved with that. As to money, heat sink compound around here is 2 bucks. And you can use q-tips if you don't have canned air.
