Not connected

I am not connected to my wireless network. I am connecting to my network with a hand me down laptop that is running Windows XP and I've already chose my network and entered my WEP key. The only problem is after that it says "Not connected" to the left of this gold start in the top right corner.

Is this something I can fix, if so how would I fix this?

Just a few months ago at the office we got to load a machine with XP. It would not connect at all to our WPA2 network. OK so we pulled it back to WEP for a moment to test and that failed too. Turns out XP (the one without SP1, SP2 or SP3) was indeed cranky to nearly busted in the WiFi department.

It took a day to let XP update to XP SP3 and then a few more steps. The motherboard chipset driver was installed and then a new WiFi driver and FINALLY we could connect again to all our networks.

If you are not running XP then you'll have to tell more. To fix the laptop we installed XP to we had to use an ethernet connection until it was updated.

In your case you have only supplied this much detail so it's possible it never worked. You didn't tell if it ever did so I lead with a recent story.

Also, if you installed Norton or other protection such will lock you out of the internet for reasons we can only guess when the date/time is wrong or the protection expired.
