I'm usually pretty tech savvy, rooting my phone, constantly buying new laptops from craigslist, doing fresh installs of windows 7 and all that good stuff. However what is different with this fresh install i'm going to attempt after getting some info, is i cannot read the sticker on the bottom of my laptop, and i think this laptop initially came with windows vista.
my question is, i'm doing a fresh install on this asus g51jx, can i copy the key down from the computer/properties menu. it is a key that has OEM in the key. If i copy that down and use it when i'm re-installing, will it work?
second question: can i use double driver to back up all of my current drivers? and just install that after i install windows?
third question, it's been a long while since i've made a bootable windows 7 disc, anyone care to jog my memory?

The OEM key is rarely useful.

My kid has an Asus and if we use the recovery media, we don't have to enter the key. That key is only good for the Asus OEM Windows DVDs. You can try it but I doubt it will work.
As to drivers, I rarely do anything but use the maker's web site or recovery media.
Windows 7 does not make a Windows 7 OS bootable DVD. So no memory to jog.

I've seen that work and fail. You didn't reveal why you don't just order the restore media and save yourself all the grief and time.
Besides, there is more to install than drivers today. There are HELPER APPS that do things like turn on the WiFi. I can only guess you know all that. And again, I can't know which apps to add since each make/model can differ.

thanks for the help. I just didn't feel like shelling out the 50 bucks for asus restore dvds
50 bucks is a little on the high side.

But since the license in Windows 7 has teeth (fails in 30 or so days) and the OEM key is "special", 50 may be the bargain here.
My kid has the Asus ROG and it offered to make Restore DVDs so we did that. I took the precaution of making a backup set as well as pulling up IMGBURN to save such as .ISO files on a memory key.
The cost of 4 DVDs and the memory key was under 20 bucks.
