Blue Screen of Death

Long story short: Older computer running Windows XP. Keeps rebooting to blak screen with the Safe Mode option. Choosing F11 for recovery triggers BSOD with code x050. All solutions I've seen so far require starting the computer in Safe Mode but this only returns me back to the black Safe Mode screen. Chasing my tail. Any ideas?

is it x050 as you indicate or 0x50 (0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA) ?

If the latter, which I am betting, it generally indicates a problem with RAM (which includes L2 RAM cache, video RAM in addition to the system RAM) or a bad or corrupt driver. Look the blue screen over carefully and see if it references a file with a SYS extension and let us know.

I have the system recovery CD that came with the computer. The computer recognizes the disk and asks me if I want to do a system recovery. When I start the process it ends in the blue screen. I'm certainly not a computer guy but it seems like the problem is very early on in whatever the systm does to get itself going.

Please note that I mentioned the XP CD, not a recovery disk, primarily because they usually behave differently during the initial startup. EXACTLY where does it blue screen? Generally, the recovery disk will first give you warnings about all data being erased, and options for the recovery are given initially as well... ., Afterward, it will then format the drive and reinstall the operating system.. After the operating system is installed then all the other software and programs are placed on the hard drive. WHERE do you see the blue screen?

If the hard drive never gets formatted and the operating system doesn't get installed then it may be hard drive that's failed.. Other things could indicate motherboard, etc. Replacing either of those on an old computer is probably wasting good money, but that's up to you.
