New computer - Old computer

I tried to save as much as I could from my old computer. I just got a new computer last week and I'm unable to recover any of the files from the cd. Is there something I need to download or any suggestions as to the steps I should take to get my old files. My old computer was already trashed. My only hope is this disk.

Did you mean HDD? What is the CD that you mentioned? More information might help.

I assume you burned some files to a CD. Can't be very much, because a CD can only contain 700 MB of data. That's why most people now use a USB-stick (up to 64 GB) or an external hard disk (up to 2000 GB) to copy their data to.

Now please tell:
- how did you burn them to that CD
- why can't you get them off

My guess: it was copied via some program that makes the disk look like some giant floppy (like Roxio). Then, indeed, you have to install that same program on your new computer to be able to read it. Probably it isn't free and you can't download it. Just install it from the original CD.
And that's exactly the reason why we recommend to never use such software.

What type of files?

Most data files require the program used to create them to open them. Did you install any of your programs on the new computer?
