Computer constantly freezing up

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that has suddenly started freezing up. I ran a virus check, no problem; ran a spyware program - no problem.
Someone told me to run msconfig and I wasn't sure what to do so I closed that out. Now I can't even get on the Internet!
What other options do I have?
Windows XP Professional

Ask the owner about how often they used "canned air" on the vents. If they don't know or ask what is canned air, then you know to begin the cleaning.
