Windows XP - Internet Explorer 8

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

The above error appears often when I'm trying to go to a website.
I can't get around it-it says to send a message to Microsoft or not...
What causes this and how do I get rid of it?
HELP!

You also would try IE's compatibility modes.

But I don't even do that. I'll use FireFox or Chrome since IE has always been a target for the bad people.
