SATA 2.5" laptop read disk error

My current Acer Aspiire 4736z laptop suddenly prompted and show "read disk error". I suspected my hdd is dead... correct me if i'm wrong. I took out the 2.5" SATA hdd from the laptop compartment and connect it to a 2.5" hdd enclosure. I then connect it via USB to another working laptop and do a quick NTFS format. Can I reconnect back the hard drive onto the laptop hdd compartment and do a normal fresh os installation.

If you can do the first steps (I understand you already did them) you're certainly able to do the last (that is, reconnect it). And then you can try to reinstall everything from the recovery media. Might work. But just as well it won't. Only trying will tell.

If I had a suspect HD I think I might want to take the time and do a full format.

When the format finishes pay attention to the statistics display.

You might be looking at a clue.
