How far back can you do a system restore

Hp 6000, windows 7, IE8

I posted a couple of weeks ago about a registry cleaner. You guys said it's snake oil. So, I did a system restore to 1/8/13, but that's really not back to when the problems started. That's the oldest date the restore utility offered me. I can tell because the folders display preference had been changed on every folder when the problems started. Now they are back like that. So, whatever went wrong was before that.

Can I just pick a date of 12/1/12 and restore again? I really don't want to do a system recovery. If it comes to that, I will probably put it off until I can't operate at all, which isn't too bright. But I really hate doing a whole new system.

System Restore only restores the operating system and if you say had troubles in a browser it's a safe bet those troubles will remain.

Has anyone discussed with you what System Restore does or its limitations?
