Red box on black monitor with blinking chinese? text

My PC which my son uses primarily to watch youtube videos will not boot after being put to sleep. It sounds like the pc is starting up as usual, but all that is on the monitor is a red box with what looks like blinking chinese text. I tried to start in safe mode but no luck. PC is an Alienware with Windows Vista.

It could be any number of things but it sounds as if someone has visted one too many bogus websites and onboard security may have been insufficient to the task. Without more information about the system it is hard to tell but you might be thinking about a reload should all else fail.

It wasn't the PC

The problem was the monitor itself. I hooked up an older CRT and it works fine. It just takes up a lot more room than the flat panel.

Weird, I've seen monitor failures but have never heard of one blinking in Chinese..one for the books, at any rate all is well GREAT!!! Glad to hear that.....

Along with the red box and what looked like blinking Chinese text the monitor would alternate between red,green and blue screen. I found this out by just turning on the monitor and not the pc. My kind of luck I guess, could always be worse.
