Laptop stalls during windows loading

Was playing a low spec game, not pushing my hardware or anything. During a load sequence it froze up. No BSoD, just wasn't loading. Pressed NumLock a few times, it did blink... once. Figured that stage was looking for more CPU then I had or fell into a loop. I powered off the laptop and went to do other things for the day.
Came back that evening and powered it up. It hangs during the windows splash during the load bar animation. Left it for 5 minutes (its less then 2 minutes for a normal reboot). A 2nd boot gives me the boot menu, latest working option didn't work, so went into safemode. Nothing pops up as '!' in device manager. Checked the Event viewer and nothing new other then the same stuff it reports every day. Did a search for every modified file in the last 2 days, with nothing out of the ordinary. Cleaned out the HDD of temp files and set the page file to clean on logout. No results. I only use the laptop for writing code and playing a few games on steam. The only recent install was the game I was playing. It's legit from steam.
Any utilities or idea's I can try? I don't have any system restore points, no malware or virus protection, no automatic updates. because A: old laptop, limited resources. B: Searching for recent files, msconfig, HijackThis will usually find a culprit, and I'll install virus protection to clean the problem if one is found.
I know my way around a PC, but I'm no computer tech. Oh! Acer laptop, Windows XP x86 pro. Hope this is an easy fix, Cheers!
