... when I installed Windows 8 about a week ago, there were about 40 updates. If it's updates that're slowing you down, I'd let them finish and then see what happens to performance. You can see the progress of the updates by selecting Windows Update from the Start menu. I haven't run into the Adobe problems.
In case you haven't noticed, MS in its wisdom, decided to remove the games from Windows 8. They have some free ones you can download from the app store, but they only run in full screen single thread mode. I've found 123free Solitaire a good alternative for the Solitaire type games (Freecell, Spider, etc.). You can download and run it free. If you download Classic Start, that will give you the traditional Start button back. It's free, and I found it extremely beneficial.
