Just like cars wear out, so do hard drives. You can't predict when, but no consumer hard drives are warranted for over 5 years, some only 1. Now you say you're having RAM problems. Download the memory diagnostics from the MS web site and run them to see what the story is for that. RAM is not expensive, but if you have failing RAM, you will need to replace it. If your hard drive craps out, it's not all that expensive to replace it, but you want to be sure you save any data before that happens. You can buy 500 GB SATA drives for as little as $60, but you need to be prepared. That includes backup and the install discs for your software. If you have to pay someone to do the hard drive replacement, that could incur labor charges exceeding the cost of the drive itself.
