15 in 1 Card reader doesn't detect CF card.

Hi,
I have a HP a6734f desktop, Windows 7, 64-bit. The built-in 15 in 1 card reader does not detect the CF card when I insert it. In fact, the little green light doesn't come on at all. When I click on "Computer", there is no drive for it. just C, D and E (CD -Rom). Tried Device Manager, nothing that I could find. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I never find my adapter to " detect the CF card when I insert it. " My method is a little different. I insert the CF card then I plug that adapter into the USB port. Then it works. If I plug the adapter in to the USB port then insert the CF card, it doesn't work.

Since this is a builtin card reader you can try the alternative and plug it in then reboot to see if it's that other issue but frankly I'd go get some USB card reader and forget the built in one as any shop visit will cost a lot more.

Have you tried other types of cards, say an SD? You may wind up having to get a standalone CF reader and giving that a try. Box stores such as Staples and Office depot carry some of the standalone readers I think they run 10 or 15 bucks.

I uninstalled the built-in card reader through the device manager, restarted the computer and it worked. Then some time later, it wouldn't read the memory card. I decided since I have an external card reader that does work, I use it.

I couldn't find it in the Device manager, Could you elaborate a little more as to where exactly in the Device manager it might be located?

You find it under disks drives

With my HP desktop, it's call generic multi-card device. You need to double click on disk drives for it to show. Right click on it, select uninstall then reboot. If it works, be sure to safely remove the memory card using the "safely remove hardware and eject media" utility. It's found down by the clock.

The other drives only show when the card is in and working

In device manager you might see more.

I'd get another USB card reader.

If you don't use the reader often and from seeing PCs now and then not being used, can mean "dust build-up". Then when you insert the CF card, it simply jams dust into the innards causing a weak connection or iffy one. The only wat to resolve this is to clean or replace the item, because of the small area involved. You've already re-adjusted yor usage to use some ext. CF reader. But, also keep in mind that the CF card itself could be be flaky. It follows the usual hic-ups of any removable media memory. I mention that if it seems to follow to your other reader later.
