Hey everyone I have an issue that has me stumped . So basicly what happend was I was playing my game and it randomly locked up but dident shut down so I manually powerd it down and when I went to power it back up it did nothing but make a constant buzzing noise but I couldent tell where it was comming from so I took off the side to take a look and when I hit the power button all of the fans/leds will turn on and fans will make about 1 or 2 rotations untill it all shuts off again. There is a constant led that tells me that the mb is getting constant power. And now this morning it dosent make the buzzing noise anymore. ive went thru cleaned my whole case re seated my ram checked all the cables and nothing looks wrong thats why im here I ran outa ideas sad

Pc specs (custum built)
Evga p55 sli mb
8gig corsair ram ddr3 (two 4 gig sticks)
Evga.GeForce gtx 550ti. 2gig ddr5 gpu
Intel i5 quad core cpu
Raidmax 730watt Psu

So if anyone has had this problem or have any possible solutions or ideas of what hardware would cause this I would be greatfull. Thank you

That's when the PSU senses something is wrong and shuts down rather than blow something up. Or a bad PSU.

This is easy to diagnose as I unplug everything I can to see if it will power up. If it powers up I can add a few items at a time to see which part it was.

If it didn't power up with everything removed I move the PSU and the motherboard to a cardboard sheet. If that doesn't power up then I'm looking at the remaining bad parts.

But I'm not done yet. I can test most PSUs with THE GREEN WIRE PSU TEST (google it) and a Volt Meter.

Managed to tinker with a little and found that when I swap the psu from 110 to 230v it starts up but dosent boot windows figured it was a bad thing to do so I dident leave it on for long just long enought to know it wouldent boot so I think its something faulty with my psu but if anyone has a dif ideas im all ears happy

PSU testers are available but most folk would just buy the new PSU or do the tests I noted.

Well I jumped it and the psu turns on and runs smooth with leds on and plugged hdd dvd drive and gpu and all runs fine.. how would I isolate cpu cuz I have to plug in 24 pin in order to get that running and when I plug in the 24 pin is when the issue starts.

One of the most common gaffes is an extra mounting post. Moving to cardboard helps determine if the boards and such are good and usually when folk check the mounting studs.

What really confused a few is "it worked before." And there it was, an extra mounting stud shorting out the back side.

Thank you bob very much u resolved my issue u have my thanks and taught me a little more about fixing pcs happy again thank you saved me from having to replace parts.. it was the mb grounding out to the case. not sure how guess it take about 3 yrs for them to start commin loose happy

That old issue can really stump folk.

You can imagine folk will dig in their heels because "it worked before." I can explain why a stud may take years to short out.

There's some paint/coating on the motherboard and over time it can wear away. I'm glad you took the advice and didn't get hung on it worked for years.
