Trying to add New Font on XP computer

My friend has an XP computer and he is trying to add a bold new font to his computer so he can see it better. I go to display and fonts and click the one he wants and click done. But there is no change. One thing, he has Internet explorer deactivated as he uses firefox and google chrome. Would this cause a problem? I have 2 books on XP and tried to follow directions in those. But it didn't work. Can't figure out why he can't add a new font. Thanks Barb

As far as I remember, it was right click>install, not "go to display and fonts and click and click done". But I might be confusing it with a .reg file.

However, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314960 gives a totally different instruction, using the Explorer menu from the Windows\fonts folder. That certainly rings a bell.

And http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/windows_fonts_addnew.mspx?mfr=true gives a complete other way, from Control Panel.

Did you try these 2 methods recommended by Microsoft? They might work with you, even with IE 'removed'.

Since Internet Explorer is so intertwined in the OS you might have your best clue there. I've never had to de-activate IE. I just don't use it.

He tells me now he doesn't have internet explorer installed on his computer. He will do that now. I thought that might be the problem. Barb

With XP, how did they do that?

There was that old IEKILLER app years ago but I thought folk figured out by now how much damage it caused. Well, it did rip it out but many odd things would occur. I'm taking your word that if you click start, run and put in IEXPLORE nothing happens.

Some folk confuse shortcuts versus installed apps.
