Randomly loosing WIFI on 1 computer, but not the other

I have a Mac and a PC (now running windows 8)

My mac stays connected to the WiFi very nicely, but my PC likes to disconnect every 5 or so minutes. I'm using a Microsoft USB adapter model MN-510.

Here are some odd things I'm seeing:

I'm connected to my university network, but my WiFi is set to "Off" However, when I go to my network settings, it seems to be running.

The old router is probably having issues since this is Win8 now. It was released when XP was the main OS. Even if installed correctly it still falls on older network values which may not be WPA2 ready or such or how the network itself treats it. On top of that it's USB connected which itself is slightly slower overall to to react. if the latest driver doesn't help, it maybe flat out better to get a new adapter that fully states its Win8 ready. I had a MN-510 but moved away from it myself, though it worked, it seemed to hic-up now and then. Even the person I gave it to, had problems only after his connecting everything. It does work, but it failed to with wifi phones and/or other than PC setups. The more complicated the less likely it worked well.

Check for a later driver for your wireless adapter first!

Before you buy another adapter, check and see if there's a newer driver for your current wireless adapter. If so, that may help you a lot.

If not, be careful to do your research before getting a new adapter, there's a lot of flaky ones out there. Check the reviews pretty carefully, and don't buy based on price, buy based on reviews (real world experience!).

I'd be trying a new one. They don't cost much. Here's one I carry in my kit bag.

That's under 8 bucks and it doesn't require added drivers for Vista and 7 so I can sniff out an adapter issue fast.

September 19, 2002 - Looks to be over 10 years old.

Great if it works but it is 802.11b, has no WiFi security (WEP is now considered no protection at all) so I'd put this one in the museum.

802.11b is disabled in my router. Such can't connect at all here. I also move out all devices that can't support WPA2 because the security issues have me moving it up to the highest we have today.
