The answer is simple, why do people resist just using a new browser? We can preach this everyday and people will still use IE and come here and complain about spyware/adware.

Which is why Outlook and O.E. gets nailed. It seems previous or wannabe virus makers have switched to spam and spyware as $$$ are involved.

I will also disagree with Bob about MSIE being the #1 cause--#1 still remains injudicious downloads of freeware without "reading the fine print". The number one problem with MSIE is not use but user configuration. Too many users do not like message boxes so they simply allow things to happen.

the only truly safe machine isn't connected to the internet. All you can really do is develop safe practices
for dealing with surfing, downloads, etc. Up to date firewalls, anti-virus, anti-parasite(adware/spyware)
programs, and some common sense about downloads-especially P2Ps. Currently completely redoing
someones XP Home machine because it was too compromised to even either Restore or load programs to clean it out.
I agree, you can be standing over a computer on life support and have trouble convincing the owner about MS updates and Internet Explorer in particular. Luckily, this owner agrees and I have a download of SP2, AVG,
Sygate firewall, Adaware, Spybot, Mozilla 1.7.3, etc.

If you have a window with a YES NO or INFO button the common activeX window click the links in the window. One will point you to the company page and one to the end user license agreement. 99% of the time you will want to click no t o these messages.

You should run CWShredder provided by Intermute cutrrently to fix your hijack. That hijack currently is installed mostly though an exploit in windows media player. Update windows media player and all other updates after you fix your hijack.
