About:Blank

I am sick and tired of having to run various spyware removal programs. It has gotten to the point of ridiculous. It has taken me two days to (hopefully) remove about:blank. Is there any way to avoid being hijacked??? I'm using XP Pro, with all the updates and filters I can think of. But, I'm a college student and must do plenty of research. Is there a class action suit going on anywhere to stop companies from getting into our personal computers???? Or are we relegated to continually spend time and money trying to fix things we didn't have control over. Is there anything that the ISP hosts can do?? These are only questions for thought.
Thanks
