Do I have to format my hard-drive?

My old computer crashed and all my files are on it. I went to a local computer store and they said the motherboard is probably fried but I can convert my old hard drive into an external for my other computer. This is totally ok with me because obviously I need my files that are on it. I've heard you have to format the drive before you can use it though. Is this true? Because if it is that doesn't help me get my files off at all...

If you are lucky and there is not a lot of file system damage you should plug it in and copy out your files. While it would be nice to format it later, it appears you have no backups so this is a start to get backup copies (PLURAL!)

I'm about 100% sure my hard drive is fine. My computer just crashed one day and it will start up, but there is no output power to the monitor,keyboard, or mouse. The PSU smells burnt, but when I replaced it the problem still persisted.

put it in an enclosure and use another PC to get your files off.
