Computer help forum: power cord possibly bad?

power cord possibly bad?

So I had my computer shut down on me and wouldnt restart, so I held down the power button for 30 seconds with the power cord out, put it back in and it came on for a minute or two. Thought maybe a fan broke and it was over heating.

Took off the cover saw all fans running then thought maybe it was the power supply. So I got an old computer and used all the same cords it powered up and then shut off within 10 min or so.

Now niether will power up and Im thinking it was the power cord, has anyone had this happpened. I dont understand why the first computer came back on if the cord was bad and Im real worried that I ended up frying both computers.

Power cords in laptops are rarely interchangeable and on desktop are not a big source of trouble. That is, I've yet to find a desktop power cord to cause burn outs.

Cords can be replaced cheap so if you think it's gone, get another.

It doesn't sound like a cord issue, as Bob Proffitt stated, cord failures (desktop) are pretty rare unless they are physically damaged. It sounds, at this point, more like a PSU issue, it is not uncommon for a PSU to conk out in similar fashion.
