Can't file associate with a program

I am missing Internet Explorer in the list of default programs, and in the file type association .http is missing. (.htt is there though.) I can't jump to a website from the link in their help menu. Doesn't matter what the program is. Even using CNet Tracker, after scanning I can't get to the website to retrieve the updates. I have Windows-7 Home Premium, and IE9. I have deleted and reinstalled IE9. System restore checkpoints don't go back far enough. I ran a full scan with MalwareBytes and SuperAnti Spyware and only found cookies, etc. I have Administrator status. I noticed this problem over the last 3 weeks or so. Should I just bite the bullet and use the recovery disc? How or why did IE on the default programs list disappear?
