All USB Ports not working on Dell 610 laptop

Can anyone help with this mystery? I have an Dell Latitude d610 running WIndows XP with all USB ports not working. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting so that the correct drivers are reinstalled but the problem persists. All driver updates show that the drivers installed are up to date. In the Device manager an exclamation point is shown beside all USB ports. The computer ports all seem to be in good repair physically. (There are 4 USB ports and I previously wasn't even using some of them.)

XP only included support for USB 1.x and the d610 I see has USB 2.0 ports. You claim you installed drivers but "XP" the original would fail for the USB 1.x issue along with folk missing the chipset drivers.

Sorry but given only the details in your post I don't think they should work at all.

Telling what version matters. You were among the first to ask which version and it does matter. I think consumers are in for a shock or ready for shock treatments.

Thank you for responding.

The message for the device status coming up when I right click on the exclamation point is - Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39)

I forgot to mention also that I am not very computer savvy so if you can speak in simple terms it would be appreciated.

Proper drivers...

Goto the Dell support website, enter your service#, the one found on a decal/sticker of your laptop. Once entered it will direct you to the area that file support downloads you may need or desire. If you have no discs to reload the laptop as it came delivered, then the website it the place to be. You need to find "chipset drivers" or mtrbd. drivers that provide the correct drivers to include USB. It will support USB even if it doesn't mention it, its *ALL* part of support your laptop mtrbd. setup. I do suggest you remove any other USB you may have already loaded, these are probably confusing the issue. Even, if these were part of some Dell support. Do that and check results. I do exclude any true damage to USB ports as they can be damaged from improper device plug-in or severe voltage uploads, etc., common to laptops if constantly used as such, never unplugged or electrical surges, etc..
