Missing sound drivers

A friend installed Windows XP on my computer, but somehow forgot to install the audio drivers. When i go to Control panel - Sounds and Audio Devices, it says there is no audio device.
I would like to know what i need and where to get it, thank you.

First off, make sure that copy of XP wasn't some hacked version. Next, check the make/model of your motherboard and go visit the manufacturer's web site to look for XP drivers. It's possible you're missing other ones as well. The most important driver will be the motherboard chipset as some other components rely on having that installed first. Download and install those drivers. I'd also collect drivers for any other on-board devices such as LAN, graphics, etc., but the MB manufacturer should have your audio drivers. If all else fails, you could go with an add in card but you still want to make sure the chipset drivers are in place before adding any other hardware. Good luck.

Read http://forums.cnet.com/7726-7587_102-2699006.html to see that installing XP is going to cause folk new to this old OS to explode and scream "You're kidding me" as they discover you can't install only drivers and some items are tucked away on FTP servers (a new user will ask what that is).

I can see why more folk are skipping Windows.
