now it turns out I can't have gmail my default on Vista.

Gmail is not an app. It's a mail service. To meet your requirement I figured that all options were on the table so I thought OK, let's find a way.

I wanted to make gmail my default email because it allows that big picture. By default I mean I want it to come up when I hit the email button in a website. Yes I downloaded the gmail notifier. Will now go try the icon one.

I don't see where you wanted to support the MAILTO tag in a web link.

I can do that. So case closed.

Edward noted Gmail Notifier but as you know, MAILTO is going away.

Maybe Windows is not the right system for you?

you can set gmail as your default email application using gmail icon notifier (as opposed to the original gmail notifier).

downloaded icon notifier. Can't find what I'm supposed to do next. I read about people and Vista so I see it can work. I just don't see how

If you read the comments you see it's author lamenting the removal of the API from the OS.

Next time can you reveal exactly what you want to do? I see we have a solution for your first question. Later you add more requirements.

I'm 60. I never used that as an excuse before just now. I downloaded the icon N but don't know what I do next. I think the other guy has given up on me. He might turn me in for being dense.

You supplied what you wanted to do and I'll look to find a way.

If you change what you wanted later then my solution is then gone and we have to start over.

I'll think about another way.

You should have downloaded the first one and only use the second one if you have a problem.

After downloading the setup file you double click on it to start the installation of the application then you follow the setup instructions. Can't lead you step by step as I have no intention of installing it and don't have Vista anyway.
