Substituting "Smilies" for keystrokes in 2010 Autocorrect

Back in the days of yore (prior to Office 2010) I was able to set up substitutions of a Smiley for certain keystrokes that I would then use as additions to my email messages. I used Autocorrect then to do the job but, ver. 2010, does not allow pasting an icon in place of keystrokes.
Example, using the keystroke ;{ I would get a crying Smiley or using a Smiling Smiley.
Word and Outlook 2010 don't allow these substitutions.
Somewhere, after many trys (a couple years back) I was able to get my Smiling Smiley using those keystrokes but, (probably due to my ancient head) I can't remember how I did it.
When I was using the previous versions, I compiled an email document explaining to my DL how they could do so. Now, I'm being asked how to do it with the later versions.
Please, give me a kick in the head and help me re-find the method for doing so.

It was SO SIMPLE at one time.
I am currently running W7 Pro 64-bit (I WISH I had kept XP Pro).
My stint as a computer tech (after 22 years Army) started in 1977 and ended in 2002 (I was getting to old for EDS).
Please help me and my contacts re-establish our "Smiley Greetings".
