Infamous 'Out of scan range' error

My trusty 21" Planar monitor finally bit the dust the other day, so i broke out an old but working, Sony Trintron 17" CRT to get me by till I can afford a new one. Needless to say, my Radeon 6770 GPU sent it into 'Out of scan range'.

I said no problem, I'll go into safe mode and reset the resolution/refresh rate so I can mess around in the OS, Win XP. Nope.. same thing again.. hmm that worked in the past and I've seen it suggested so I press f8 again and try Enable VGA mode.. nope same thing. Getting frustrated, I want to play WoW!! Put in an older Video card, same thing. Can anyone suggest my next course of action besides buying a new monitor. I have messed with computers for a while and this one has me stumped.

Clarification request: What's the highest scan rate your old Sony can support?

I'd try and set that rate manually rather than rely on VGA mode. Try setting it at 60 hz. It could also be that your old Sony has a problem. I'll presume you can see the POST screens and that it will work in some mode.

My Sony Trinitron 200es supports 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz max. It is a known working monitor, The problem is I can not get to windows to lower it or I would have. Not even in safe mode, i still get the out of scan range error, which makes no sense to me, that's why I am here. I can see XP when I hook it up to the Planar, but it is too garbled to read.

Something's not right.

In Windows Safe Mode it's using a very safe driver at 640x480 and 60Hz so you've lost me how you got around Safe Mode's video mode.

At this point I'm going with you may have more than one bad thing. The things are monitors, cables and video cards.
