Computer help forum: System Restore

Thank you for responding. I did reboot but that did not fix the issue. I would be happy to try your recommendation of booting from the Windows disk but could you put the procedure in layman's terms for me? I would certainly appreciate it, thanks. I am currently running Windows 7.

Hi Bob, I did as you instructed and received the following message in the Administrator Command Prompt: Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would yo like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? I am really baffled

That you didn't boot your Windows 7 DVD.

However if you answer YES to that last question, it should do that on the next boot if the system is not infected or badly damaged.

I ran it from the Windows Desktop because I don't have the Windows 7 DVD. I did not get a disk when I purchased my PC from Best Buy. Anything else I could try?

Find somebody who has a Windows 7 disk and use that. Any repair shop can do it for you also.

A Windows Vista or Windows XP disk probably work also to run the chkdsk. It's the same NTFS filesystem that needs to be checked. But a Windows 7 disk works for sure.

If you find a XP CD that is maked "Windows XP" it may have trouble with today's big drives and on most machines, even with a XP SP2 or XP SP3 CD the hard drives may not show up.

Sorry but in the future, tell the forum that you don't have that so we can look to other solutions.

Remember that some infections do block this. With that out of the way a Windows repair disc can be downloaded from many places. Here's one. (first find with google and not red flagged by WOT.)
