So what is the error(s), write it down and google for it. What is the model#, look at decal/sticker to fully ID it. next, using another PC d/l whatever and save to CD or flash drive in or to retrieve its use on that PC. Does this PC have a CD/DVD drive? Did you check the bios and how its set-up? What is the OS? Can you reload the OS from some disc?

Right click 'My Computer'>Select 'Properties' and tell us what you see there.

There should be information about what version of XP is there, and also the Service Pack version should be listed.

Under 'Computer' should be information what kind of processor and memory size. Does it say what SP (Service Pack) is installed? Should be SP3 for the latest version available for XP.

Sounds as if this system is seriously out-of-date, missing hundreds of security patches if this is so.

Newer antivirus programs require at least SP2 be installed for them to run. 1 out of 6 systems do not have a resident antivirus running. ???

You seem to be where little can be had and anything you have isn't ready. You need access to another PC, use it to d/l SP3 for XP. You'll need an XP OS disc or a XP based repair disc. If your lucky, there are XP repair disc for little cash, google for one. -OR- find an XP OS version maybe through eBay or Craigslist, again for some cost. A repair disc file .ISO version in order to burn(on a good PC) is possible, these are legal. If you get your hands on one, burn it and run it and it should correct small OS errors, etc., but not everything. Don't confuse it with a restore/recovery XP disc, which maybe available as well. If you get one of these be sure it directly supports your IBM model#. Items like drivers and any specific s/w for that IBM model# is found at IBM support website or Lenevo.

There's also a chance you have a hidden partition on your HD, verify that and files are present. This partition should contain the recovery/restore OS if so installed. Check the IBM support what key sequence is needed to access and start this and should it be there, use it to do a "repair console".

My first question is how are you hooked up to the internet and who is your service provider? I am still not sure if you have a connection or not. Does any browser come up? In control panel, under INTERNET OPTIONS, what is listed as the home page? If you have a hook up the first thing I would be curious about is what is listed under HOMEPAGE in internet options and perhaps we might be able to proceed from there.Keep us posted.

Note the Service Pack designation in the box. If you have no Service Pack listed, then you have the original XP Home as XP was first brought out.

If this is the case, you are missing SP1, SP1a, SP2, and SP3. Once SP1a is installed, you can jump directly to SP3, and then get all your security updates after that is done. No need for SP2, as SP3 includes that along with newer SP3 updates.

With the information you provided for your system, this sounds about right, as a 2.0 Ghz processor was made around that time, 2002.

Just a thought, I am wondering if the server is using (furnishing) their own security software package, as some do and might be creating some of the dead heading issue(s). I have run into similar issues especially when the server is using the Norton 360 (factored into subscription) software. But as you said, some and many of the issues are likely related to the SP's from MS. The key, of course, is to get them to download or format and reload windows from a media source with the SP's onboard and that would be a bit far fetched at this juncture.

You really haven't fixed this PC in order to assure it's ready. You're accepting it at face value. Whatever the use was before you brought maybe still active and/or any start-up or boot-up setting could be at work. It may have too much going on and at your level of expertise it's best to restart from scratch, totally redo the whole system. BUT!!! you don't have the OS and and/or gotten the basics the drivers, etc. for such a task. So, you're trying to correct issues that are better being wiped clean and reset the system, afresh. Otherwise, you'll be coming back and forth to resolve whatever pops-up. Since, this is also an IBM PC, they tend to have bios setting that could interfere or unless reset need to verify what they are. You'll still need a service pack SPx depending on whatever OS version you get, the final SP is SP3. That can be gotten from MS download website or google XP SP3 to get it from MS.

As for your www service/ISP, it maybe when you're on some website because you've a dated browser it just won't work right. Try Firefox or Chrome to see if that helps and make sure it says, finished or complete when done. If these still won't work right, then a possible OS issue could be at work, or your security could be at fault to. But, again, you don't report what the heck that is. It boils down, you're better off reloading the OS, drivers, updates and then the pgms. you need. Sorry, but this seems to be where its going.

I totally agree, the best way would be a reload and as you said, if it is the Original IBM load there are likely some proprietary issues and perhaps even with a reload. But at this rate he will be bouncing around like bb's in a barrel trying to resolve potentially unresolveable issues.

I get the impression the value of this PC is 0 or negative. I hope you didn't pay much more than zero.

The best you can do with it, in my opinion, is forget about Windows XP and install Ubuntu. That lets you use it for basic things like browsing, media player and word processing. And best of all, it's free.

The link that you sent goes right to IE but shows a redirect. When you go to internet options and try to change the home page, highlight then backspace, should make the window blank, then type in msn.com, click apply then ok. So if I understand what you are saying this doesn't work? That would be the procedure to try to see if the redirect can be bypassed, this could make a difference.

When I did a quick check this PC was originally sold using Win2000. the upgrade to XP was a natural one, but it also suggests you're peaking the h/w abit and if possible increase ram to the maximum, provided you can find it. IBM tends to make specific PC and you have to follow its proper install of h/w and/or bios setting. This is all on top whatever OS issues you have. If this still has a 2.0ghz Celeron cpu, that's a dog of a cpu. It may work OK, but it lags from a full-blown P4 cpu, it just does. I can't see a reason why you can't get any updates or IE browser corrections. It *MAYBE malware* at work if it seems to stop to often when you're trying to improve the setup. Either that or some old s/w that's not doing as well as it should. Again, putting it back to square 1, seems more and more the best action to take. This is your PC now and you're free to play with it until it finally works. I don't think I can offer more until you have better recovery options.
