How to delete a file on my desk top

This question sems trivial. However I have a pdf on my desktop, which opens fine and I can read it, but if I try to delete it my pc goes into limbo and I usually have to reboot.
So how can I get rid of this unwanted file? Should I go into DOS? Does it indicate an OS fault? I am running vista 64, and I believe I am virus free (according to AVG).

The item on the desktop is just a shortcut, where in the system is it located? I am assuming that this is something that you downloaded from the web, a little more information as to what it is and from where it came might help.

There are 2 files one a short cut and one the pdf both located in my user profile, downloaded from a website. When I double click the pdf it opens Ok. If I try and delete it or right click it then I lose all icons including the Start button on the desktop. Cntr alt delete works so I can do a restart. The error message that comes up is Run time error R6002 floating point support not loaded. I run AVG and microsoft security essentials and nothing is reported. But it looks Iike I have a registry problem/corruption so I may have to a clean instal.??
There is quite a lot of R6002 reports on the net, but nothing has so far helped. Registry sweep reports problems but while the sweep is free you then have to pay for action, and I am think a clean instal is better but a lot of hassle.

Did you try:
- MOVEONBOOT (free download)
- deleting it from the command prompt in the System Recovery Options (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/What-happened-to-the-Recovery-Console)
- deleting it after booting from a Linux disk

Since the registry isn't involved with deleting a file,it's improbable it's a registry error.

Lucky for you, registry sweep did not work.

Never use a registry cleaner optimizer. If you really want to work on the registry, do it yourself. Never trust this sort of program to do this properly and without errors, such as removing things necessary for proper system operation.

If you are not able to do the work yourself, leave it to a professional.

If this was mine I'd use UNLOCKER on it prior to the delete.
