Well there maybe some caveats with your version of XP. You didn't provide full details on what you have and XP version. Understand OEM versions of the OS from some manufacturer(laptop) will only work with their branded PCs or models. Proper loading of the OS not withstanding, you may incur some issue or not be able to finish the install as I summized here. Otherwise, it may install or upon added steps continue and/or proceed to not accept the OS key#, if that wasn't provided, etc.. So, let's not take too much for granted, thus report back what you experienced. What Kees has posted will be the start of the OS install, its at some point that I've explained will come into play or not. good luck

I don't know where that reply went, but this is what I said. The computer booted from the CD, then said that it was checking my hardware. The CD kept spinning on and on, but nothing happened from that point on. I don't know how to alter or delete partitions, so that my be what is holding back the setup.

A good alternative is another free download, DBAN. It totally erases the hard disk. Then the XP install should work, unless it's tuned by the OEM that made it to only work on his hardware and not on any hardware.
Then you need to find a retail version of XP. That won't be free.

Put that XP CD in the CD-drive and reboot. It should boot from that disk (if not, go into the BIOS to select it for this boot or permanently as first boot device). Then answer the questions. Be sure to delete all partitions that are present on the hard disk. Then create a new one and have it formatted NTFS.
You might need to download specific drivers for the hardware in this desktop from the manufacturers site. You can always reinstall Linux if you can't find enough of them to make a working system.

One minor point

One minor point. In my experience anyway, XP's first stage installer tends to hang up if you have a non-FAT or NTFS partitioned drive. So it is helpful to use a program such as gparted to either just delete all existing partitions, or set up NTFS partitions ahead of time.
