Just where did these recovery/restore discs come from? Further, are these discs similar to your model# required and not "generic". -OR- are these discs from some vendor you found? it's important and also the real value if they can work at all. Also, these aren't from "borrowed" sources.

Explain the above and provide what model# Compaq PC you have. Plus, are those discs including or have "Vista service pack 1" or known as Vista SP1. Answer what you can and come back and report.

Understand, while you try to restore you PC, that the real problem is not just a recovery but a true fault not based on the software or OS but actual h/w.

Several experienced users on other forums recommended SystemDisks, a subdivision of Neosmart.net to buy good disks:

I don't think it said anywhere whether or not it contained SP1.

Not full blown OS discs

Well, I check that website and read the top portion to explain what those CDs do. They're not full OS install discs but rather "repair discs" or recovery discs the term they use. That term maybe confusing, but it appears these are nothing more than repair. Such discs usually reload or correct any basic OS corruption faults and thus repair the current install. These are very handy, however, you really don't install the "full OS" as if they were from MS. There are other recovery discs, which do provide a true OS install but these cost more and usually supplied to an actual model# if possible like your Compaq. here is one, though you can google for others:

These are legal as they are OEM based systems as are others sold. Just be sure, you can trust the source.

As for repair discs, these as i stated don't reload the full OS but attempt to repair the current install. Under these circumstances they can't repair everything. I do suggest if it stops allow it more time, 15-30mins. more because it maybe still doing what it needs unless it flat out fails.

if you have access to another PC/laptop, you can remove the old HD, install in a ext. USB case or adapter and fetch the critical files and thus save them. Once that is done, attempt more severe repairs. If you haven't yet check Compaq for possible available restore/recovery discs from wares. These too are less costly than MS supplied OS.
