Vista Recovery Disks Stop Part-way Through on my Compaq Pres

My Compaq Presario desktop suddenly crashed and all I could get was a black screen; could not even get to Windows. I've spent two days reading various articles. I don't want to reinstall and lose all my documents and photos. so I bought the Vista recovery disk. One of the screens it brings up has type so incredibly tiny and blurry that even when I put on 3x magnification glasses I still could not read it. The process is encouraging in that it says it's having success and to re-boot. I hoped Windows would come up, but instead just several more pages of white type on black background racing by. Then it stops and a blue box in the middle of the screen appears that says "OUT OF RANGE." Does anyone know what means and how to resolve it? I'm not on a wireless connection.
Also, the Microsoft Help on this topic says to disconnect everything including keyboard, mouse, and monitor to use the recovery disk. But then it follows with "follow the prompts that appear on the screen." How am I supposed to do that without a monitor or keyboard connected???? So far i have just disconnected everything except the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and wonder how that is impacting the failure of the recovery process.
