I don't find any detail of what you did after you installed Windows. There are drivers to install plus helper apps such as Intel's RST and Dell's Quickset to list a few. Not much has changed over the years in regards to installing Windows. That is, it's still quite a mess and we find issues today like you read in the next link!

Thank you for your reply. As for what else I installed, I never got past the Choose a name screen on the fresh install, so i never installed anything but windows 7 professional. I reformatted the HD which is a 1.5TB SATA, each time I installed the new install of windows. I reinstalled it 3 times. The reason I was replacing the old HD was because it started running extremely slow, so I backed up my files on an external drive. Installed the new HD in the computer and first installed the Windows 7 operating system from the windows disk. After that wouldn't install because it came up with an error, I reinstalled using the Dell installation disks and windows installed but is so slow It took it 20 minutes to get to the start up screen to choose a language.

Any suggestions???

So the cause for the issue was not found. Did you try the usual clean up of the heatsinks and replacing the heat sink compound? The Intel CPUs go slower when this happens.

All Clean, Still Slow

Well, all is clean and compound applied. Still slow. I have tried to install win 7 64 to a new sata HD but that won't install, It gives me a error half way through. This is so frustrating.
Any ideas? TY

still very very slow. I can't figure why, especially with a clean install. I havent been able to put the drivers in yet.

This has been true for over a decade. It appears many get to learn this over and over.

-> No offense but do you think the days of Windows are numbered? That is, since an average person can't install Windows today, is it game over?

Can't figure this out

Here is the rundown

i have 2 -1.5 WD sata HD
one was a mirror image, (GHOST COPY) of the original HD that came with the computer.

I have run the imaged drive for 2 years and used the second HD for backup, leaving the original HD unused and unpowered.

two weeks ago the computer started running extremely slow and wouldn't open up any programs without it taking an hour. So I formatted the HD and tried to install windows 7 again on it. NO go.

I got your suggestion about heat sinks and compound. Did that and reformatted both HD. Got one of them to install windows after almost 2 days. Still slow as a turtle.

I just put the original drive in that came with the computer and it works fine. I don't understand why it won't work with the other HD especially since it has worked for 2 years.

What do you think???

Well there is that oddity about 4K sectors.

If the clone has from an old 512 byte sector to a new 4K drive, there will be issues.

It's been many posts and I'm only seeing bits and pieces of the machine and story. I know folk don't want to tell all but it means I must keep guessing. I'll guess badly.

I can give all info that you would like to help me solve this nagging problem. It doesn't make sense to me seeing that the cloned drive worked great for 2 years. I could understand if it was going out, but then the other exact drive I used for Backing up data wouln't work either when I formatted that one. The origanal drive that came with the computer does work and the computer runs at proper speed (opens programs, email etc, in timely manner.) Whenever I get a new computer, I clone the drive and disconnect it from power and motherboard so in case anything happens I have an original HD to go back to. Then I use the cloned drive as my HD

Hope this helps a little.

Also the fan is blowing at full speed as if the computer is overheating???

If we step back and look at it simply then the fault would be with the part that we swap in.

If the old HDD is fine and the new is not, then either the HDD is failing or the OS on that HDD has issues.

I'd focus on this HDD by looking at the S.M.A.R.T. report and keep in mind that a Windows install is not simple enough for folk to get it right every time.
