And if the XP CD doesn't boot, maybe a very old CDROM drive. Both are pretty cheap compared to a new computer.

YES, someone may suggest a CD LENS CLEANER but I can buy a DVDRW for the same price!

I thought about that, but my son's notebook crashed last week (on a roll here) and I get the message unmountable_boot_volume. We bought an external CD player and when I tried to get the Windows XP CD to run, it wouldn't read it either.
Being a single Mom, I can't afford to take them to a repair shop so I need to try to fix it myself. I'm not a geek, but I'm not a novice either, so I can fix it if it doesn't cost much.
BTW - This computer was built for me and I replaced the hard drive and the fan about 3 years ago. This is only the 2nd problem I've had with this PC.

My answer would have changed a little if I had the make and model and desktop or laptop.

But for now I have little to work with.
