Computer help forum: Why do sites not recognize my browser version?

when you say that we should'nt use IE except when we really need to , does that include All Trident based browsers or IE exclusively? ...Digger

Yes. If it's using the IE rendering engine, avoid it like a diseased leper. Or as I'm sometimes fond of saying, don't touch it with a stolen 10ft pole.

Doesn't matter if you choose Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Chrome as a replacement, just pick one. Though if Facebook does buy Opera, then I may have to strike it from the list, but for the time being...

Would scripting be disabled by default after I reinstalled IE8? I may have inadvertantly disabled something trying to stop some other pest, but not that I recall. I thought a new install was just that - a clean slate, but since all my favorites were there, that apparently is not the case. I've run Malwarebytes with no detection - what could it be?

I've checked everything and the problem still exists. A pharmacy account that I use to refill prescriptions upgraded to a "new, designed just for me" site, and I'm getting the message that I need to upgrade the browser again. An interesting not is that CNET is doing it to me also. To access this thread again, I had to join under a new user name and e-mail. I even had CNET to reset my password for the old username, but everytime I tried to reply, I was in an endless loop of reply - login - reply - login, etc., even though I was using the password that they had just approved! What could be causing this? A bug of some sort?

A similar issue was a new antivirus antiphishing feature. If I hide the browser version the phishing or such site can't use that to determine how to exploit your machine.

I don't see much else in details so that's all I can offer.

Then again, did you try another browser like Chrome?
