Mozilla Thunderbird not downloading my emails!

I'm new here and would appreciate some help with this - it's driving me nuts!
Yesterday I installed the latest version of Thunderbird, to replace Microsoft Outlook which just started doing it's own thing.
I set up 3 accounts - one secure connection to my university email, and two others - one POP and one IMAP. To begin with all seemed to be working great.. But today I turned on my computer and no emails have been downloaded from the POP or IMAP addresses! here's what I did next:
I checked on the webmail sites directly, and there are messages waiting to be downloaded.
I checked the server settings for both POP and IMAP addresses - both seem correct (i.e. using the correct ports, protocol, passwords etc)
I checked my Avast firewall - it has made the correct port exceptions for my email addresses.
I checked that windows firewall was still disabled.
I 'removed' both the IMAP and POP email accounts, and set them up again.
Still nothing! When I click the 'Get Mail' button on the top left corner of Thunderbird browser, the green bar appears at the bottom of the screen to suggest the program is scanning my accounts - but then nothing happens!
Please help - I can't face going back to Outlook! I want a Macbook!!
