my laptop screen won't turn on after i spilt water on it

about a year ago i spilt water on my laptop and since then i have been unable to turn it on. when i hit the on button no matter wether it is plugged in or not or if i have the battery in or not it will always do the same thing. it will light up the power button (and if plugged in the charging button works) and operate the fan. i can also hear the groaning noises a laptop makes on startup. however i have no sound and no image(or light) on the screen. is there anything i can do to fix it?

To fix it: bring it to a repair shop and ask them to fix it (better ask the price first).

Sure, but it will likely cost you far more than the laptop is worth. You'd probably be better off putting any money you might be willing to spend on fixing it towards a new computer.

Swap, old or new

Some laptops are easier to work on than others. You gave no hint what model# is was, so if you plan to do this yourself, you gauge your abilties. I can offer a repair shop will do the job but at what cost. Here, you determine the need vs repair cost. You may try to find a replacement same model# and swap HDs in order to continue on, buy used laptop and use ext. USB case for old HD to retrieve data and/or re-use. -OR- buy a completely new laptop and go from there.

Sounds expensive to fix. But data recovery may be cheap.

So far we've been able to salvage the hard drive from such machines by putting them into USB cases. The laptop is rarely repaired since you often find it needs a motherboard, keyboard on average and then you find the battery is too old, another charge and by then you are at the price of a new laptop.

If you want to spill liquid on a laptop, there are Panasonic Toughbooks and the new Lenovo with the drain. I'll share a link.
