I picked up a m8530f (without a gpu) for cheap to use as an alternate to my laptop. The specs can be seen here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01469325&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3740333#N444

I want to get it up to date a bit to use for a year or two before it gets scrapped. What would be the best to bet for around ~$150. New CPU and a low end x16 card? x16 2.0 GPU? faster memory? I imagine theres a bit of a performance issue if i install a newer PCIe x16 2.0 into the x16 1.0 slot. As far as my intentions, I'd like to run Diablo 3 smoothly but I dont plan on buying any graphic heavy games beyond that.

Most bang for the buck.......gpu

Look into the Hd 7750........no psu upgrade needed.

Ram.....confused.
The specs show the machine has 5GB of ram.
The specs show the machine supports dual channel.
5GB and dual channel are a mis-match.

How much ram is in the machine?
How many sticks of ram are in the machine?
What size....in GB....is each stick?

I was confused myself why HP decided to do this. All four slots are filled 5120MB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM memory (1x2048MB, 3x1024MB expandable to 8GB).

There's no way to enable dual channel with that mix.

What you've got is 5GB running single channel mode.

If you want to enable the dual channel feature your looking at tossing all the ram.

Then installing a 2x2GB kit.

Example.

That adds 60 bucks to the mix.

Stop!
There might be a reason why you picked up this unit cheap.........maybe it's broke.
I'd take the cover off and clean out the innards.....get those heat sinks and fans nice and clean.
Don't be afraid to put a few shots of air thru the psu from both directions.
You might be amazed at the crud that comes out.

Now run the unit for a few days.......if all ok........then think about spending bucks.
