To be correct a full forensic exploration would have to be done. Most often it's just that old memory card issue or the owner didn't know to format the card about once a year. This is not in any instruction I've read but beyond that there are PCs with issues, malware, virus and such that can corrupt a card's contents.

MY BEST ADVICE is to head to one of those Photo Printing machines with the CD option and see if it reads it.

It most likely happened because you took the card out while it was being accessed by the computer.

You can pay a data recovery company to recover those pictures (when you format a memory card or a hard drive, it only deletes where the pictures are, but pictures are still there as long as you didn't put anything else on the card). Data recovery is generally very expensive and most of the time it only makes sense if you are a business who lost critical data. It's the easy but expensive option.

The other option is difficult but free. I once ran into the same problem. I did some research and I was able to recover the files using a program called "test disk". You can download it for free but it's not very user friendly for people with limited computer skills. I spent a few minutes to learn the program myself but I recovered all the files a 100%.
