When you want a list of any sort, in most word processing programs, the best way to go is to make your list first using the return key after each item. When your list is complete select it and add your formatting.

In WYSIWYG HTML editors that is a best practice as well.

You could google your Open Office question but I bet there is an off setting.

As Jimmy suggested in his additional reply, I'm migrating to "Lliberia" --the land of milk and honey--, closing my tent in the dry land of OpenOffice.

The two of you are like "Moses" in the Computer World, guiding folks out of wilderness which they individually encounter now and then.

As a quick workaround, you can just hit the backspace the first time it tries to be helpful and inserts a bullet point for you. It will revert the changes, and then generally ignore any subsequent actions that might be considered an attempt at creating a bulleted list.

And as Bob hinted at, OpenOffice is effectively dead, so it might behoove you to move on to its more actively developed sibling LibreOffice. LibreOffice is based off OpenOffice, so you'll feel right at home, it's just while OpenOffice hasn't really seen much development since Oracle bought Sun, LibreOffice has been on fire you might say.

Roadblock in Installing LibreOffice

Following your suggestion, I tried to install LibreOffice from http://www.libreoffice.org/download/.

I have installed in the past scores of such programs. While installing LibreOffice, however, I frustratingly encountered a roadblock at one stage, mysteriously saying "Please exit LibreOffice 3.5 and LibreOffice 3.5 Quickstarter....". The suggestion/warning does not make any sense, for there is nothing, as far as i see, to exit regarding LibreOffice 3.5 and LibreOffice 3.5 Quickstarter. Thus, I find no way to continue the installation. I get into the same loop again and again if I try a fresh installation.

Could you kindly take me out of the above "wilderness" which I have unexpectedly newly encountered?

When you uninstall OpenOffice and install LibreOffice I'm guessing that with LO that it will reconize and open the OO files (.sxw) you had before?
