Since safe mode works I am thinking of TWO areas to explore.

1. Laptops need about a SIX MONTH cleaning cycle. Try the usual canned air on the vents ahead of schedule. And if you never cleaned it, that's a clue it needs it.

2. Malware. It could be malware but System Restore is broke by security suites by Symantec (Norton), Kapersky and others. Your post doesn't say which but System Restore failures are common now and the security software makers deserve the calls for support for breaking that. I think I'm going to call the security software malware if they continue to break this.

The very first thing to do: boot from a Linux Live disk you make and use that to make a copy of all your stuff to your USB-stick or external hard disk. Of course, this will fail if it's hardware issue with the motherboard, if if it's just Windows this will succeed.
The second thing to do: copy that copied stuff to another PC. You have 2 copies now and are reasonably safe.

Then it might be time to reinstall Windows from the system recovery disks that came with your Acer or that you made yourself.

See, I'm such a newbie I didn't even see the Reply button and just responded to my own post. Anyway, I wasn't sure if you'd see this unless I reposted it as a response to you, Kees, so here it is:

Thank you so much for your fast response! I don't know how to make a Linux Live disk, I've never heard of that before. Earlier today when I did get my computer to go to the last configuration, the first thing I did was back up to my WD external harddive, so I at least should have the stuff from yesterday and before, just not today. So I should reinstall Windows? I have a CD case that I know the operating software came in, but the CDs say "Acer Upgrade DVD" and "Microsoft Windows 7 Media Upgrade." Is the media upgrade one what will reinstall it? To reinstall it should I put it in right now, while I'm in safe mode?

It's good to read you have a backup. First make a copy of that to another PC or laptop. You wouldn't like Murphy's law to apply by finding this external drive failing just when you need that data.

For the reinstall of Windows, better read the manual that came with it. There's a good chance, however, that http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080220145158AAb5MMq will apply.
Let me stress that this will restore the machine to how it was when it left the factory. So everything you did to it yourself (configuring, installling software) is gone. So be sure you've got everything you need, either on your backup or on CD, DVD or from the Internet.

It's working!

I didn't have to reinstall Windows (yet)! I noticed my McAfee notification said Real-time scanning wasn't on and I couldn't get it on, so I checked their website and they had some steps, leading up to a download I ran and then when I restarted it turned back on normally. I was able to set up a restore point, which I wasn't able to do before, and I was able to get into the uninstaller and uninstall Google Talk, which got installed about ten days ago. Other than that the only thing installed in the last month was Adobe Reader X. Everything seems to be running fine, except it still beeps at startup. I've started it two times now, including the first time after running the McAfee thing. Any ideas? Should I uninstall Adobe Reader X too, since it was recent? Will the beeping make it go haywire again?
