Besides, you do not seem to have a recent copy of XP Media Center Edition 2005 at your disposal for a complete reinstall procedure that will require, only, the Service Pack 3 from 2008. Still, you would be stuck with an ancestral PC of 4 years ago with no knowledge of properly flashing a much newer Bios for this, really, aging mainboard and, to locate the proper, most recent, device drivers for all graphics/video/sound chipsets of such ancient machine.

In other words, way too much work and headaches that could span weeks or, even, months of research online. So, sacrificing a little bit of money to make a major rehaul of your own, personal, office, is, quite recommended. Your business partners will look at you with a revigorated set of interested eyes upon you. Being up to date is, the only trend that never passes, ever.

Single core. I worked in Dell Tech support for over a year for a contractor. For Nortel Networks for 7.. as things are I cannot access the Internet on that machine. and most of all I am retired and perpetual state of brokeness. due to medical bills that caused my retirement. The said a two hour fix, now going on three days. thanks for the reasonable suggestion though and have a better day.

your Start's main menu and click on the Network Adapter sub-menu arrow and, you should have one called rather Marvell Yukon, Realtek Pci-e controller or, an Intel/AMD LAN internet chipset/card for your RJ-45 LAN port. Double click on that and check how old is your Device Driver and, if older than 5 years, it would explain as why it can no longer connect to the internet. Plus, make sure a recent copy of a Firewall and Anti-Virus program is, also, installed onto that aging single core machine.

If you still are on dial-up/Dsl internal card modem, you do not have the use of the Network Adapter. Click on the Modem one, then on the name of such modem unit's name twice for bringing the window for using the Driver Tab. The Driver Tab will give you all of the information that you need for the current status of such device.

Now, knowing that you are constantly broke, use that other computer to download the AVG Anti-Virus 2012's Free Edition and make a DVD or CD copy of it. Install it on your single core machine. As for the Firewall, activate the already existing one called Windows Firewall in the Control Panel window. Once you get back onto the internet, go onto Microsoft.com's web site and make a search for the Free feature that came with Vista(5 to 6 years ago) called Windows Defender and download and install it. Defender will be your totally free app. for anti-malware/anti-spyware.

Giving me the little bit extra information on your current status, really helped me discern the real problem and, that way, I could come up with a real, productive, helping, solution. I am, myself, not that rich, either. Really do hope that helps a lot more than my previous posts.

my HD took a dump the other week 60gb replaced it. I used my dell operating system reinstallation CD p/n 1R594 and keep getting a disk error every time I try to boot up without the rein disk in the dvd player (internal) what is going on and what should I do to remedy this. Dell sx260. thanks

Maybe you used your reinstallation disk the wrong way?
And what exact error do you get?

If you can boot into the Safe Mode with command prompt, you should be able to run sfc /scannow as suggested above.

Well, today I was finally able to get the old beast up and running. I did a repair install of XP using a disk from another computer which I was able to find. I then had trouble pulling up the activation screen. I had to download IE7 onto a USB stick using another computer, install it while in safe mode. The activation screen then displayed and i was able to activate.

Why respond to sweaner's success in such a mean spirited way? Many of us cannot afford to keep our technology up-to-date and cutting edge. Congratulating sweaner on his success would have been much more effective to the readers of your comments.

I agree with you. Why should I buy a new machine if mine still functions. This is not a critical machine at my office, and I have no "business partners."

While I agree that this did take quite a number of hours, I do derive some satisfaction when I can be successful. In fact, I am "enjoying the past" right now!

As of today, I was no longer considering giving help that is clearly not needed by Sweaner and, was way more helpful towards somebody else with an internet connectivity problem.

Ursus_Technicus replied to one of my posts within this very same topic thread. So, two days ago no longer concern me what-so-ever. Sweaner's case is permanently closed.
