If you mean Windows, then look for Taking Ownership & your OS in Google.

For example, if you're using Windows XP, the Google search will be Taking Ownership XP and the first link in the Google search will give you this from Microsoft;

actually it's a hard drive from a computer that was using XP, and I'm trying to get the pics off using a computer that uses windows 7. I don't think this is the problem but it's probably not helping. I have done the "taking ownership" thing on a couple of the files. It allways says the same thing. It says that I have takin wnership of the file but that I need to close the properties box I was using and reopen the file. But when I do noithing has changed. I'm just back where I started with a prompt telling me I do not have permission to view the file/picture. I'll check out the links you provided though. At least I'll have a procedure list rather than just "trial and error". Thanks again

If not, follow the steps precisely and I suggest you do that on the "folders" as well, not just the files themselves.

If all else fails, there is a workaround, but it means trying something you may not have thought of before, using a different OS, a Linux Live CD.

This is a Linux OS, typically Ubuntu, which is wholly installed onto a CD. Reboot the system with that CD inserted, let Ubuntu load, (it makes no changes to the windows operating system), then using Ubuntu's file manager, copy those files of the XP disk onto some external or removable media.

Here is the link about that; http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download and to be sure you know, the file you download cannot just be burnt to a CD, it must be burned as an ISO to the CD to make it bootable.
